Chlorine in our drinking water
To protect our drinking water against germs and diseases transmitted by water, disinfectants such as chlorine, chloramines, ozone and chlorine dioxide are commonly used. In fact, for over 90 years, chlorine has played an important role in this protective order. However, during these years, sectors of the scientific community, regulatory community and the public have expressed concern about what is considered levels of safe and acceptable water.
As part of the wastewater treatment and industrial waste, chlorine acts as a disinfectant, killing microorganisms that can cause serious diseases such as cholera and typhoid. This chemical has played a key role in the history of water almost the elimination of water borne diseases and allow people throughout the world to prosper. Given the nature of the chemical, chlorine is easy small amounts apply and remain in force in the water treatment plant all the way to the tap tap. This is an important attribute that distinguishes it from other forms treatments, such as chlorine is addressing the risks in the water distribution network at a potential of contamination exists.

These chemical reactions result of a group of chemicals known as disinfection byproducts. Some may be familiar with one of the most famous products, called trihalomethanes (THMs) This product category consists of four chemicals. chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dribromochloromethane, and bromoform. Scientific evidence THM classified as known carcinogens and continues to justify the link between low consumption of THMs in drinking water and serious public health problems.
In 1980, EPA adopted new regulations that require cities to reduce chlorination byproducts (THMs) in water less than 100 parts per billion. This was later reduced by the EPA to 80 ppb. The scientific data suggest that the benefits of water chlorination are much higher risks associated with THM and other byproducts. While this is generally understood, a growing number of questions arise regarding the safety of exposure to THMs in the latest daily decades.
To cope with potential long-term health risks, the current solution seems to lie in the removal of THM in the point of use. The method simpler to reduce chlorination by-products is to put water in a jug and let it sit in the refrigerator overnight. THM also be reduced by boiling water or aerating water in blender. However, these are realistic options for the everyday person in the march. Home water filtration is a better fit, and a most effective methods for reducing THM is through carbon filters the water, such as Berkey. More recently, ceramic filters have as an additional filter layer of protection against potential THM.
