What are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are a group of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that protect the body against free radical formation by neutralizing them before they can travel freely through the body causing havoc.
Free radicals kill and destroy some cells outer protective membrane of others. If free access to the substantial gains of the inner cell, can damage the genetic code (DNA) that controls cell reproduction. If the DNA is altered, the cell or not playable, or an abnormal cell is formed.
Many plants produce antioxidants such as part of their natural protection mechanism. Therefore, a diet rich in plant foods can provide a variety of antioxidants.
Several essential vitamins and minerals have antioxidant properties. These include vitamins A, C and E, selenium, gamma linolenic acid (GLA), L-cysteine, L-glutathione and superoxide dismutase (SOD). These antioxidants are also known as free radicals.
Vitamin A promotes germ Death enzymes and is necessary for healthy mucous cells. beta-carotene and vitamin A destroy carcinogens.
Vitamin C is a potent stimulator T-cell effector activity. Reduces lipid production in the brain and spinal cord, which often incur free radical damage. In the presence hesperidin, bioflavonoids one, acts as a potent free radical scavenger.
Vitamin E protects the coating around each cell and prevents the cell membrane and fat rancidity. Zinc is necessary to maintain normal blood levels of vitamin E.
Selenium stimulates increased antibody response to infections from germs. It also increases the effect of vitamin E.
GLA is a key regulator the role of T lymphocytes in the body. Spring morning oil, seed oil, black currant and borage oil are the sources of preformed GLA.
L-cysteine is used by the liver and the lymphocytes to detoxify chemicals and poisons germ.
Glutathione-L rids the body of free radicals. It protects the body against the harmful effects of metals, drugs, alcohol and cigarette smoke.
SOD is an enzyme that revitalizes cells and reduces the rate of cell destruction. It also helps in the use of zinc, copper and manganese. SOD occurs naturally in barley grass, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, wheat grass and most green plants.
Since antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, is believed to be crucial in the prevention of many diseases. And there is speculation that antioxidants can fight or delay much of the deterioration that occurs with normal aging. There have been studies indicating that antioxidants may play an important role in both prevention and treatment of disease. (Eg heart disease, cancer, pulmonary disease … just to name a few.)
In general, food is considered a better source of antioxidant vitamins and minerals tablets. Although the body metabolized artificial vitamins and minerals in the same way that natural foods in food, natural nutrients that contain many essential nutrients are not pills.
To ensure an adequate intake of antioxidants, eating a varied diet that includes or lightly processed vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and other plant products.
Herbs containing antioxidant actions include astragalus , balm , basil , chaparral, Comfrey, gingko biloba, ginseng, gotu kola, kelp, licorice, purslane, sage and tea.
