RainShow'r CQ-1000 Shower Filter Exposed: CQ-1000 for less than $ 35
In the development of a shower filter for chlorine removal, designers are limited basically two types of acceptable means for potable water use: GAC (granular activated carbon) and KDF (atomized brass). Other media have tried mainly calcium sulfate, but not acceptable for us to use shower filter.
GAC is an effective means of removal of chlorine, and many manufacturers principles of thought of its properties are directly transferable to the shower filter applications. Not so. First, the carbon is not recommended for hot water. Unlike drinking water units, on average, operate at room temperature, shower filters are continuously exposed to temperatures ranging from body temperature to 105 F. At these high temperatures, some of the contaminants absorbed by the coal can break off and re-enter the stream.
Since GAC also is light in weight, which requires a much larger housing to achieve the same density as other filter media. KDF density allows more efficient use of space. For example, 16 ounces of KDF can be housed in a filter body with only 13.12 cubic inches of internal capacity. For GAC to achieve the same level of performance, we need sufficient resources to fill a bucket or more! GAC is also very absorbent, such as a cellulose sponge saturated with pollutants only after hundreds of gallons of use in front of thousands gallons of KDF, requiring more frequent replacement.
Rainshow'r was the first manufacturer of shower filter to use KDF in their shower filter and present Carbon shower filters are not the norm, and KDF media favorite among designers shower filter. This non-organic filtration media does not eliminate organic pollutants. Contrary to the claims of the manufacturers of other shower filter, KDF Fluid Treatment, Inc. states that heavy metals like lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury can not be removed with the amount of KDF used in a short filter body to a high flow rate, such as exist in a shower filter. However, it is extremely effective in removing chlorine. KDF is also bacteriostatic (inhibits reproduction), and tends to reduce or eliminate mold and mildew build up in the shower.
KDF is comprised of 50% copper and 50% zinc. It removes free chlorine by reversing the electrochemical process that originally separated the chlorine from sodium in a brine solution. Here how it works: The copper and zinc are dissimilar metals. The tension between these metals generates between 900 and 1100 millivolts of electricity in an aqueous state (ie, as water passes through media). This is enough electricity to generate a galvanic charge, which restores the original electrolytic environment released free chlorine. Chlorine is able to recombine with the most common metal in the water, usually calcium, to form a soluble chloride, which washes out the filter and is harmless for humans.
KDF not only offers great capabilities of chlorination, which lasts much longer than the carbon media does. Depending filter model and the amount of KDF, a KDF shower filter should last for seven to nine months. However, it should be noted that the KDF effectiveness is measured by its ability to generate action Electrochemical described above – not gallonage. The relationship between the cathode-anode copper and zinc (which generates the load floating) is interrupted by particles contaminants in water. As a result, fewer particles in the water that enters the filter, the longer the KDF media will generate adequate levels of power so effectively remove the chlorine. Therefore, a KDF shower filter in Bangor, Maine, where the particulate contaminants in water are low, it will last much longer than one in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Because buyers are more familiar with the "gallonage" terminology, many KDF shower filter gallonage list of manufacturers and marine life. However, this should be seen as a figure of warranty and not a true representation of the real life of the product.
