Phosphate Remover
Disco tank. Extreme levels of nitrate. Help.?
We drive a tank, which has 5 disc, two fish pump, 4 cori catfish, snails 2 and 15 on tetras, neon lights. The nitrate levels are above 20 mg / L and can not understand why. The tank is 180L, you get a water change once a week. In the carbon filter cartridges asset we have, phosphate remover, noodles, bio balls. Regular food use main power plant and worms disk blood. And the filter is a 1200 CS aquarium I mean 80 mg / L Any idea why?
As Ian has said the water changes more frequent and larger must help, however, this will have the opposite effect if the tap water contains high levels of this nutrient. Ammonia breaks down into nitrite and then nitrate, phosphate and nitrogen gas. Nitrate does not decompose and builds up, simply. I would say it has a re-think on the level of storage tanks, and that seems excessive. No Plecs all monsters become enormous, there are several smaller species such as Ancistrus, Peckoltia Panaque and available. Could you provide a picture of PLEC? This would help us to make a positive ID and tell you if it were to grow the tank. Protein Skimmers are designed for marine use and while there are skimmers available fresh water, usually are designed for outdoor ponds and are far from being as effective as their marine counterparts.
