Power Filter
I have a tetra whisper power filter and I just finished cycling?
The water is yellowish and the filter bag is yellowish.I have driftwood in the I can live plants.When store and buy a new bag filter wouldnt get rid of all bacteria and when I buy a new sponge wouldnt get rid of bacteria.Should I can clean the filter bag or just buy a new one? I also buy new gravel I have fear of doing a water change because I think that could kill bacteria.
The yellow water will leach tannins from the driftwood again. It can affect the pH of the water (reducing it), but not usually a problem. Regular water changes will reduce, and gradually go away as the tannins out of the wood. Usually just rinse the filter media and use it again. Just be rinsed by hand in a bucket of water in the reservoir of age when you do a water change. Do not worry if the bio-bag is a little gungy, that's the BIO part of it. You're right that if you change the media to lose some of the bacteria in the cycle. So if you have to change out, just change one item at a time. If you change the bag leave the sponge alone, and vice versa. In this way there will be some bacteria in the tank, enough to keep things until the new element starts to work anyway. Do not be afraid of the water changes, they are the best thing you can do for the tank. The bacteria live mostly on the surfaces of solids in the tank, in most filter media, etc, but also the gravel and rocks While not dry or exposed to chemicals to get the cycle will continue to operate. The water change 20% week is usually about right, but the biggest change will do no harm, and may even be necessary if the tank is with excess water or very good condition are required to fish restless.
