Red slime algae?
I have a lot of red slime algae in my 29gallon biocube and it seems a bit ugly, how do I get rid of it I have to clean shrimp and coral band shrimp and two blue damsels
Get rid of this is often a matter of control of nutrients and water flow. Although it is called a "Algae" is actually a bacteria (Cyanobacteria), and can be a pain in a saltwater tank. Although we hear much about snails, hermit crabs, or shrimp that feed on it, not really – if all you eat the algae around it, and eat some of the cyanobacteria in error, it seems. Like any algae, however, you must get nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) from the water. Nitrate is an end product of ammonia produced by fish in the tank, but also can be found in tap water in some areas. If you use tap water for its salt water, you may want to have tested for nitrate. Tap water is also a phosphate. If you are using tap water, you may want to try switching to reverse osmosis water. You can buy a unit to do this at home (rather expensive, the membrane must be replaced periodically, and we will use 8.9 gallons of water for every gallon produced) or purchased in stores in the Culligan self SuperWalMart stations – this will cost around $ 0.33 per gallon, once you buy your reusable packaging. You can also try using a phosphate-absorbing cushion filter. Ciano also as areas of high water flow, so you can see if you can put a small powerhead in your biocube and target the most.
