Bring along a water filter Camping
Do you like camping? Do not forget your camping water filter!
It's great to be out and feels like if you were one with nature, living off the land. No electronics or stress at work to worry about, just being outside the network.
When I'm out camping I always imagine what it would have been like to be a frontiersman to walk hundreds of years before these forests. I wonder what they did to keep heat and dry before the arrival of Gor-Tex and Thinsulate! Could have been quite uncomfortable I guess.
One of the other amenities nice, modern, we have is camping water filters.
It is not really glamorous … I imagine that our ancestors enjoyed the right to bar dip in cool mountain streams found along their travels.
However, waterborne diseases were present and common, and would be back in the day, and they are now. Just do not hear much about them because we have readily available water treatment systems at our disposal.
It is important to note that the filter is doing more to get sand, leaves and mud from the water. It is also screening out harmful bacteria such as giardia, which can make you sick!
I used to go to a camp where there was a picture of a pee in the river Doe. The caption reads: "Your Grief Relief -." This is how giardia is transferred and trust me – you do not want!
When it comes to water filters for camping, you have several different options.
First – you have a hand pump and filter. This pumps water to the lake or river and a water bottle, which passes through a filtration system first. You have to manually pump water through, but it's easy – even little bitty boy scouts can.
Second – have been incorporated in a filter bottle water. Just fill the water bottle and go … as a kind of Britta water filter, water passes through the filter and clean the moment you drink it.
Third – you have an ultra-violet water treatment system, as SteriPen, explosions that water with the rays of light to sanitize and kill germs.
Not too many pills and drops that can be put into the water. I have used drops of iodine before, but I realized that my teeth stained yellow. Also, be careful of putting additives in the water because the chemicals are consumed yourself. May be the lesser of two evils.
Personally, I think a water filter for camping is the way forward. You can get one to share with your family, or getting everyone their own bottle of filter. It's good to have options.
